Ovinniks are black-furred house spirits that vaguely resemble cats. They tend to live in granaries or drying houses. Despite their feline appearance, they bark to scare away intruders. Ovinniks are not sought after like other house spirits, but if one chooses to live in a family's farm, the family gives frequent gifts to the ovinnik consisting of milk, pancakes, or dead roosters. Tradition dictates that this family will have their fates revealed every year by a touch from the ovinnik; a warm touch means good luck, a cold touch means misfortune within days.1
