Gamemaster Complete Encounters

Was it ever decided whether or not these should be considered canon? I remember some discussion on the Paizo boards that these were sort of proto-canon, but I wasn't sure if they should be referenced on the wiki or not.——This unsigned post was made by Alfred. Please sign all posts with ~~~~.

They are not listed among canon sources in our Canon policy and should not be considered canon. We might want to clarify that they are specifically not allowed, but in discussions with Paizo editors, they have said not to consider them canon or even pseudo-canon.—yoda8myhead 22:55, January 29, 2010 (UTC)

At this point, listing and/or cataloging fan-created material or even non-canon PRPG support material is not within the scope of the project for PathfinderWiki. If a product is official canon produced by Paizo or a licensed contributor to the Pathfinder Chronicles campaign setting it belongs here, as would any OGL sources used in official products, such as the Tome of Horrors or Plot & Poison. Sorry that this isn't the place for that, but I know a lot of PRPG support sites are popping up all over the place and those might be better suited for your product. -- yoda8myhead 14:41, 6 May 2009 (UTC)

Plagiarism

I was just wanting to know exactly how much info we are allowed to post. For example can I post the entire article covering Lamashtu (except the crunch) or would Paizo prefer we not do that?? - Khellendros 21:23, 8 December 2008 (UTC)

Posting anything verbatim from any copyright source is not only against the wiki's policies, but illegal. Paizo has been very generous with us to allow for the inclusion of their IP, and as such it is the wiki's stance that we should do our best not to plagiarize. Take a look at the articles for Abadar and Zon-Kuthon, both of which are quite extensive, but don't copy anything from the articles directly. To ensure that things aren't plagiarized, write your own article using the Campaign Setting, Gazetteer, Gods & Magic and Pathfinder 5 or whatever sources you want and be sure to cite them as you would an academic paper so that anyone reading the wiki will be directed to the actual source and hopefully even buy some stuff from Paizo. If you have questions about anything more specific, feel free to post them here, in the Wiki Forum or email me at yoda8myhead@pathfinderwiki.com [1]. Hey Yoda8myhead. I'm Richard1990. I'm a helper who helps out gaming wikis. I help out by creating new content, expanding current content, attracting more users, helping admins with customizing the appearance of their wiki, and other things related to the wiki. I'm currently focusing on a number of other wikis right now though, so I'm not really able to do large community attraction or create articles for this specific wiki, though I can still help out with coding problems or other problems. Subcategories and the Project

Well, I've finally started running a campaign again, which means it's time for me to start contributing once more despite my work load at other projects. It's not, really. I went way overboard with it at the time, and then went and undid about 200 edits. I've got a lot of real life stuff taking up most of my mental space at the moment and don't know when I'll really have the time to invest the energy and planning into this project, so I sort of left it on hold for the time being. -- yoda8myhead 16:04, 16 April 2009 (UTC)

Using Info from Pathfinder Wiki For Pathfinder Society Support page

Everything on the wiki is released under the GNU Free Documentation License, so it can be used anywhere that also operates under the same license (similar to the OGL). Since we use Paizo-owned copyright in most of our articles, your site would also need to be registered under the Community Use Policy. Beyond that, I say use whatever you need. I think our goals are the same in supporting Paizo and Pathfinder. I just ask that you direct users to the wiki, encourage them to contribute to the project, and do so yourself if any of the pages you make for your site would be relevant and/or useful here. You're not causing any problems. Until you start vandalizing the site (don't do that, by the way) it's all help. There's a learning curve involved in getting used to how things work, but if you pay attention to changes made to your edits by other chroniclers and ask questions you'll pick it up real fast. I don't remember what used to be there before as I generally start new threads manually by double clicking a page and editing. But wikia updates the mediawiki software on a constant bases, adding new plugins and apps and such. Pathfinder SRD

Hey Yoda - I created a new topic on the forum but maybe I should just ask here instead. I'm unclear on if you guys intend this wiki to include all pathfinder rules info such that it servers as a replacement for d20srd.org, or, is the intended focus on "fluff" only? If its fluff only I think we could have a relationship between this site and www.d20pfsrd.com, a Pathfinder SRD site I've been working on (with help from a few other Paizo posters and other rpg blogger folks). Welcome Jreyst, and thanks for all your work on the PFRPG online SRD. As I mentioned in my forum response, we have a no crunch policy so you'll never see any of that here. Our goal is to be a comprehensive resource for canon of the Pathfinder Chronicles campaign setting. That said, I have no problem directing people to your site from the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game page, and perhaps even the No Crunch policy and Scope of the project. We'd also appreciate you directing users who want to add Golarion-specific flavor to your resource here. Despite the fact that rules are not something that is on this wiki, there are factual articles about the Pathfinder product line (including the ones containing the core rules). I think the existence of the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Reference Document comes under a similar situation. It is an important part of the history of these rules (and the campaign setting they were set up to support). The PRD was set up to get 3rd party publishers to create content that could be used in games set in the Pathfinder Chronicles campaign setting. I've taken the liberty of throwing up an article. Feel free to edit it, if there is anything there that needs fixing.
I would especially be grateful for anyone who could replace the 'future additions' section with a detailed schedule of the dates when each part of the PRD was (or will be) added. David Shepheard 06:23, February 21, 2010 (UTC)

Addition to Feats Portal?

There's a new feat in Pathfinder® Character Traits Web Enhancement. I was going to add it to the Wikia here but noticed on the portal for Feats that it was not already linked there. Not only that there was no category for Feats that come from Web Enhancements. Could you please add a Feat cetegory called Web Enhancements and then a link to a book mark for the 'Additional Traits' feat? I can then add the new feat.

I'm pretty new at this stuff so I don't want to go mucking around in the portals pages and end up breaking stuff =)

That particular feat first appeared in the Second Darkness (Pathfinder Companion) and is already listed under that supplement. You should be able to add the feat there and when I have a chance I'll edit the portal to show the web supplement as an additional source. That said, that particular feat is almost 100% crunch, since it simply allows you to pick and choose the more flavorful elements, so I don't know how to add it without it being too crunchy. But I'll leave that up to you.

This does bring to mind a question I had forgotten before posting some time ago. After returning from the project I noticed a fair number of feat articles had been created and subsequently removed; I thought this was most likely due to both the fact of our no-crunch policy and the fact that they have no role in the mind of a chronicler in Golarion (later to become the Point of View policy). But things like character traits have no place in the project based on PoV, either. Was it decided to distinguish these instances from the rest of the project, or is it something else we'll need to cover in our policy discussions? -- Heaven's Agent 15:27, 10 July 2009 (UTC)
It's still something we need to discuss. I am of the mind that the flavor of a regional feat or background trait should be incorporated into the relevant article (such as "many hunters in Andoran have honed their sense of sight to be able to shoot arrows farther and with more accuracy than those untrained" for the Hunter's Eye PFS feat). I think it would also help if we more clearly direct people to one of the many wikis or pages that have crunchy elements as either part of a Golarion SRD or a PFRPG SRD. Featured article

Hi there! I saw your post on the main Wikia forums about a different featured article for a week. I have found out a way, but you need to make sure to customize it with the featured article wanted. Just copy the coding withing the box below, and customise it.

You will have to continue the number to how many weeks are in a year, and add the featured article text into the empty space after the number week it is. Oh, and by the way, the current week is week number 13, just to get you started. It may be a good idea to place the text into a separate page for each week (like Template:Featured article/1 for the first week of the year), as it will make it neater. Yes, you can place it directly into the main page coding. I suggest using the templates, as it would make it more organized looking on the coding. Re: Admin policy

I'm alright with it, but it does leave me with a problem; I only have two emails, one for junk, the other for business. The junk email I only check sporadically at best, and the business email I can't make freely available online. Loose Cog

Have you used the add_text.py script? I tried mine to add deletion templates to the conversions, but it just failed silently:

Re:CSII

Cool I wasn't aware of this its a really good Idea to keep it all in one easy to track place. I've crossed out all the countries that I've written up using the Campaign Setting, my only worry is that I have not take all the information on the different cities from those sections of the campaign setting but I do intend to do write ups for all the major settlements once all the countries have been written up.

The Alkenstar article is looking great! I was wondering as the Admin do you have any preference for what order the sub-heading (geography, history etc) go in. Community Use images

Hey Yoda - I'm confused about something. I noticed that the Chupacabra jpg image has, in its description, text that says it was released as part of the community use package, but I don't see it (or any other monster pics) in any of the packages. Am I not looking in the right spot? I wanted to consider including open versions of artwork on d20pfsrd.com for monster pages but didn't find very many "open" versions of monster pics. -- —This unsigned post was made by ?. PFRPG design decisions etc.

Hi,

Can you, or another viewer of this, help me out finding some resources? I have been trying to track down discussions of the rationale for the main changes to the the mechanics of the game between 3.5 and (final, published version of) Paizo's Pathfinder. The useful hits I've made searching the Paizo website and here (Wiki) have been extremely rare. Has anyone collected this kind of discussion from the designers and, of secondary interest (to me,...right now,...no offense to anyone intended), the playtesters? Is it available on some threads that I could try to read through?

I am particularly interested in the aggregation of skills (why these and not others?) and in the changes to effectiveness of some of the combat maneuvers (did the designer's character in some past 3.5 game, or his pet NPC in his own campaign, get grappled and given repeated pink-bellies and/or wedgies?) -- I did see one place where the lead designer (not M. Cook, the other guy who did the real work) said "the old grapple rules were broken," but he did not elaborate and I never found anything else.

Oh, also, is there any kind of bulletin board for connecting with Pathfinder players and games in one's geographic vicinity?

Hey there, Old School Guy. It sounds like the things you're looking for can be found on the Paizo Messageboards. There's a huge section from the PFRPG playtest, though weeding through it could take a long time. To my knowledge no one has compiled a rationale for each and every design change, though I didn't follow the playtest that closely. Searching on the Paizo Messageboards can be tough since it only searched the first post in a thread, but that's the place I'd look. There's also a Gamer Connection forum on the same boards where you could hopefully find some local gamers or people interested in online PFRPG play. Image Info Template

Greets, Mark, and happy New Year! I'm glad to see things haven't really slowed down here; I can't afford to buy any of the new source material at the moment, so this is my only real resource to keep in touch with Golarion's goings on. Maybe I can start buying some more books, and contributing again, once the new school semester begins and I find a job on campus. Champions Online Wiki is starting to get some reliable contributors as well, so hopefully I can start coming back more often; we're reaching that critical mass where folks start recognizing the project's potential. :D

Anyway, I'm visiting to see if you have any problems with me bringing the Image Info template you designed to the Champions Online project. A new contributor is interested in adding images from the source books, and I want to have something in place for him to use in order to properly credit the artists and holders of the IP. I could create my own, but ultimately I doubt I could come up with anything better than what you've already built here. Re: Calling all admins

By all means, if you ever notice anything you'd like to have implemented here, fire me a message. And don't feel too jealous about the CO wiki's rapid growth; many of the articles over there are extremely small, covering only a single subject in a single subset of a single group. They add up quick, but there's really not much to them. If you were to pull aside the articles pertaining to the Champions RPG, rather than Champions Online, you'd see a much slower rate of expansion.

I'll do what I can to help monitor things given the upcoming spotlight. It's great to hear, by the way, and well deserved. A lot of work's been put into this project, and the continued dedication shows. I look forward to returning here as my primary online home. Someday. Maybe sooner than later, unfortunately, as my computer has begun experiencing problems running CO; overheating, video card shutdowns, just a general mess of things. I hate the thought of leaving right now, especially considering that it will essentially spell the end of that project, but I'm not going to try to run a game wiki without having access to the game it's about.

I just finished this week's homework (I'm determined not to fall behind this time through college), so my mind's a tad frazzled, but I'll give the discussion some thought tomorrow and add some input. My apologies for not following through with this yet. My financial aide was only half of what I was told I would be receiving, and had planned my budget around. Erinyes art

In the Bestiary in stores the Erinyes picture shows an angelic character firing a flaming bow. Yet this picture is nowhere that I can find online. Unfortunately this image is not available online. We are only permitted by Paizo's Community Use Policy to include images which have been released either on their store blog or the Community Use Package. Since the erinyes art in question has not been released in either, we can not legally use it here. I would suggest looking in the Bestiary to find the artist who did that particular piece and search for their personal gallery or deviantArt account. refactoring the lodge pages

question: I filled out the Pathfinder lodge page, and put in stubs to various pathfinder lodges in the article. There already exists a few other pathfinder lodge articles -- the Grand Lodge for example, the Sueda Lodge, and the Pathfinder Society Lodge (Katapesh). Would you prefer that I 1) just link the Pathfinder lodge page to these other pages, or 2) take the content of the other pages, push them into the Pathfinder lodge page? I prefer option 1), which allows us to use the Pathfinder lodge page as a "master index" of lodges, and, lets the other pages be children of that page. Let me know. thx! Conflict in dateline

Hi,

I just made an article called 4029 AR in which Qadira invades southern Taldor. thus beginning the 'Grand Campaign' This is correct according to the book 'Taldor: Echoes of Glory'. Yet, this conflicts with other information from other sources. Apparently, that war started in 4079 AR, according to the Campaign Setting. Just thought I'd let you know, perhaps there's some info I'm missing. Cheers - Pirhana1

It looks like the 4079 AR date from the Campaign Setting is the correct one, which means that the date from TEoG must be a misprint. The reason I believe this, is because the dates for the Even-Tongued Conquest are fairly well set, and Qadir's invasion of Taldor is what precipitated this conflict. --brandingopportunity 01:47, March 29, 2010 (UTC)

Looking for Input

Good morning, Mark. I've long disliked writing articles about places/events that involve adventure modules and the like, and purposely neglecting the events of the adventure; its something we've never required, but I think we've all done it at some point for a multitude of reasons. So I tried to include a brief overview of Crypt of the Everflame in the history portion of the article for the town of Kassen. My goal was to stick to basic knowledge of the event, what those living in the village would know as per the policies we've established, without including too much information that's not detailed in the module description or by its cover art, yet still adequately documenting a major event in the settlement's history.

I'd appreciate input on this small section; I think I succeeded, but as the author I could easily be looking at it from a different perspective than everyone else. -- Heaven's Agent 18:17, March 28, 2010 (UTC)

Basically, we can include fan-made images, photographs in the public domain, and any Paizo-owned artwork that they have released for reproduction under the terms of the Community Use Policy. Question re Monster Entries

I would like to try my hand at entering and expanding some of the data re the monsters; would likely be pulling from the Bestiary to start with. Is there an "example" of a "complete" entry that I can refer to? Given that the majority of the content in the Bestiary is Open (I think), how much effort would you like in rephrasing fluff? Text imbedding extension

Do you know how to embed text from another site?

Bassically, I want to insert this into a page: https://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=0AjXlyDncWvnZdFhFTnpTcmF5Z2dQU0k4MkI4LXpDWEE&single=true&gid=0&output=html as content. Like an iframe without scroll bars. I know about the google docs embedding option but I want it plainer than that, something that just looks seemlessly like an html table in the page..

So far I am trying to use this http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Anysite but I am unsure how to "First, you have to make file called 'anywebsite.php' containing the following code, and place it in your extensions folder."

I have created the following pages but I have the feeling I am completely on the wrong track.

Missing character in Citation

Could you look at the Order of the Rack page and see what can be done with the second citation?

Alrite I understand alittle bit better now about how the wiki actually works. Do you have to delete my new information now cause I don't really know how? I'll start working on actually citing references for what I write but I do understand I can't just be filling in things that the books say isn't true.

Thanks for clearing me up on this and if you have any advice on how to start integrating new topics into the wiki then please let me know. I'm a much more creative person who likes to use the box as a starting block for the rest of my ideas.

The wiki move

I'm really sorry I missed the discussion at http://pathfinder.wikia.com/wiki/Forum:Moving%3F since I have been hosting a mediawiki based site for many years, and definitely would have had some input. From reading over the discussion, I'd like to bring up some concerns that, hopefully, it's not too late to address.

If you want to host your own wiki, no matter the topic, I'd recommend that you ask the following questions:

  • Why does your wiki exist? Is it just an ephemeral reference? Do you want there to be a community around your topic? Are you looking to make the pages into permanent records of the topic?
  • If you want permanency, you need to think long-term, so you have to answer some hard questions:
    • What happens when the person who owns the domain name dies / gets hit by a bus / decides to go on a walking tour of China for 3 years?
      • Can anyone else take over paying for the domain?
      • Will the registrar even talk to anyone else or will the domain lapse and be scooped up by someone who wants the click count?
    • Is there a hosting provider involved?
      • What happens when they go out of business?
      • Can you back up your data outside of their service?
      • Who owns the account with the provider (see concerns, above for domain)
  • Have you considered what kind of traffic this could generate?
    • What would the costs become if your topic became the subject of a major motion picture? What if the next U.S. presidential debate featured the question, "would you be bothered if your child was interested in ..." relating to your topic?
      • If costs went sharply up, how would you mobilize the community to pay for it?
  • Conversely, what happens in 10 years if the topic becomes obsolete (the next big thing eclipses it)? Will a very small number of interested people still be able to pay for it?
  • What happens in 50 years? Does the site just go away?

Most of these questions center around the problem that I have struggled with: how do I achieve permanence on the Web? I don't have a single set of answers, but moving away from Wikia seems to put all of those problems squarely in your lap, rather than in theirs. I am concerned by the forum discussion that I saw that long-term solutions to these problems were not clearly discussed before the move. Then again, perhaps the forum discussion wasn't the only thread of communication.

I think you took my questions a bit more specifically than I intended them. This is sort of a "checklist" that I think anyone considering hosting a Wiki should review. When I asked things like, "Why does your wiki exist," I wasn't asking why the Pathfinder Wiki exists, since I know that. It's more a prompt to think about why it exists in the long-term.
A few other random points:
"Anything can happen, but thus far Alfred's had the domain for over 3 years and renewed it even when we were on wikia. If it became an issue the community would come together to purchase the domain from him and cooperate on paying for it, the same we are with the host we now use."
From experience, I can tell you that, when it "becomes an issue," it's far, far too late. At that point, you find that you don't have the authority to deal with it, and the domain is either "part of the estate" if he's dead or it's controlled through a registrar account that you have no control over, should he simply go missing. I know you want to be trusting, but it's not really a matter of trust. It's just the reality that people go away eventually. Sometimes it's because they have somewhere else to be, but eventually it's going to be permanent for all of us. If you want your Wiki to hang around for a couple of years or maybe even a decade or two, then you'll probably be OK, but eventually things will change.
Your options, here, are bounded by the resources at your disposal and Alfred's willingness to cooperate. I'd suggest that he retain administrative access / ownership to the domain, but list two other active people (like yourself and someone else) as the "billing" and "technical" contacts (this is standard DNS jargon, and will apply no matter which registrar he uses). In this way, you can make changes if they are required, even if he is on a long vacation when/if your hosting provider tanks or you come under some massive DDoS attack and need to re-point the IP to save your hosting provider from melting down. Beyond that, he should probably also have a will that lists the other admins as beneficiaries of the domain name.

Doubtful (though you work for them, and I don't, so maybe you know more than I do). There's a big benefit they get from having a Wiki that's controlled externally by the community: they can police it to some extent for compliance with Community Use, but failure to comply isn't their problem directly, and Wizards/Hasbro can't come after them for the community's mistakes.

Yes, this becomes a sub-set of the domain concerns if you look at it in that light.

Yep, I understand your reasons for not wanting to play ball with Wikia. I'm not really arguing them, since that ship seems to have sailed. I'm more arguing for thinking out the consequences and planning ahead for the long road.

If that's the way you see it, then that's fine. My view of the things I've put up on the Web is that they are, to some extent, the legacy of my interaction with the world, and I'd hate to think they'll just go away for lack of interest. Hello Bodhisattva, and welcome to PathfinderWiki. There are always tens of thousands of things to do around here, especially right at this moment. We have just moved to this site from a different server. Please excuse our rough look at the moment, as we're still getting our bearings in our new home. If you are interested in helping with coding, I would recommend that you post your interest on the Talk page of the admin Aeakett who spearheads most of these issues. In terms of adding content, I would recommend that you pick up any Golarion canon source you might have (AP material, PFS scenario, Campaign Setting, etc) and simply start writing about a topic that interests you and which has not been fully documented on the wiki. Also, we are always in need of spelling, grammar, and punctuation proofreading, so that is NEVER turned down. Let us know if you have any further questions. Re: Category restructuring

I'll keep that in mind, and I'm glad to hear they're functioning once more. I'll filter what I can through our automated helpers. Unfortunately, I'm starting to realize that a fair number or articles are going to need a more human eye before this task is done; I'm finding many articles that have been miscategorized, while others in the same category have not. It's going to be a fair amount of work, but in the long run it'll be worth it.

I'll try to remember to flag what category edits I have to make by hand as minor edits, at the very least. If it gets too out of hand, I could possibly create a not-quite-a-bot account specifically for this purpose as well. Looks like it would be appropriate for me to join the conversation as well. First, because I haven't done so yet, I want to welcome you to the the project, Bodhisattva.
Over the next several months, I'll be looking to condense and unify the project's category structure. Now, in the past I've been wary of utilizing templates to automatically add articles to categories; personal experiences have been bad, and any attempt to do so always seemed to result in some unforeseen errors, and rarely functioned as intended in the first place. That said, I understand a lot of these issues have been resolved over the last couple of years. Once a basic category structure is defined, we can look into giving automatic categorization via templates a go, though I fear the structure of our template designs may not lend themselves well to this end. Help Needed!

I created an article called Storm King, redirected it to Korramzadeh (to use name, not title) then realised I'd spelt the name wrong so did a further redirect to Khorramzadeh. Thinking this was way too convoluted, I reversed the redirects, but as Khorramzadeh now already "exists" it won't let me redirect there from Storm King! New to Wiki

Tweak to your template tests

Instead of doing:

{{ #if:{{{print|}}} | [[Category:Artwork from {{{print}}}]] | [[Category:Artwork from unknown sources]] }}

You should be able to do simply:

[[Category:Artwork from {{{print|unknown sources}}}]]

which uses the default value of the parameter if no value has been passed.

But, you've got the basics down perfectly - that's the start of auto-categorization.

My programming knowledge is limited, so while it's missing some scripts I'd like or has limited functionality with ones it does have, it's also something I can wrap my head around. Another template example

Noticed you added keyword1, 2, etc. to the new File template. I've done the same thing for Books, only with trimmer code. In this approach, we have an unlimited number of entries (as long as they're sequential), and it will automatically stop when the next entry doesn't exist: {{ #foreach: author$n$ | [[Category:Works by {{{author$n$}}}]] }} --Morbus Iff 00:42, 27 April 2012 (UTC)

Great suggestion. I wish I had understand that I didn't need to change anything on the pages transcluding the template to use it, though ;-/ Can you advise a good guide to some of the new terms, like $n$ and such, that one like myself who might want to learn how to make more robust templates could look over? Template Spring Clean (Navigational Templates)

Yoda8myhead, FoiledAgain has pulled together a solid list of all the templates now and I think we are ready to move on to the next steps in tidying them up. In the back of mind I am pretty sure, though, that you are personally on a mission to move the navbox type templates from an older format to the newer format. I think the old style ones are in Category:Content templates, whereas new format ones get to go in Category:Navboxes. Is this correct? FoiledAgain (Bill) is suggesting that all such templates be rehoused in a Category:Navigational templates, which seems a sensible idea but if this would mess up your 'to do list' then I want to check with you first. --Fleanetha (talk) 13:14, 19 December 2012 (UTC)
