In trade

Stone is widely available and variable in price. In Avistan, stone is often scavenged from ruins. Arcadian marble is traded in distant cities such as Kintargo and the River Kingdoms, where its weight makes it difficult to steal when transported upriver,3 and red-veined black Arcadian marble is especially popular in Cheliax for both its appearance and insulation.4 Arcadian granite is also imported to Avistan.5 Limestone flats span the Glazen Sheet desert of Osirion.6

Quarries of stone can be sources of economic development. For example, the city of Whiterock in Ravounel began as a quarry stop for granite and limestone.7

In architecture

Stone is a common building material, particularly in places where wood is less common or in dwarven regions. Stone is also popular for large buildings designed to last longer, and giants or magic are often employed in stone construction.4 Homes also use stones and gravel to manage plant growth and aid with traction.8 A small house built from stone can cost approximately 2,000 gold pieces to purchase or 80 gold pieces per month to rent.9

In Aiudaran architecture, buildings feature intricately carved recessed stone arches meant to evoke aiudara. New Thassilonian architecture uses rune-carved, gemstone-encrusted stone blocks designed to fit perfectly together.10

The Cyphergate, which arches over Riddleport's harbor, is among the most famous stone structures in Avistan. The Desert Lighthouse in Avilan uses heatstone and polished steel to guide sandships through the Ketz Desert. The ancient Thassilonian Irespan's stone pilings stand more than 300 feet tall and 100 feet wide over Magnimar.11 The ceiling of the black stone Ruby Fortress in Brevoy is lined with stone spikes dubbed the Dragon's Teeth.12

The pyramids of Osirion's Valley of the Pyramids use limestone12 and granite13 in their construction, as does the Necropolis of the Faithful in Sothis.14

Stone is also used in the walls of cities, such as the granite walls of Kibwe.15

Stone giants craft rare stones into cairns as part of their veneration of the Estig the Hunter aspect of Erastil.16

In magic

Infused stone is required for crafting golems and is typically salvaged from constructs, elementals, or magical ruins such as the Irespan.3

Thassilonian Thrallkeepers determined a way to enchant stone to be invisible during daytime, yet visible in direct moonlight. They used such stone to construct the Black Edifice in modern-day Varisia.17
