Forums: Grand Lodge > Maps - image categories

I think maps, and categories for them, could use an overhaul.

not just cleaning up the category tags, but expanding the category list to enhance clarity

for example File:Bigger Basic Flip-Mat.jpg isn't really an image of a map, it is an image of a cover art (and correctly categorized as such) - the product contains maps (as many do) but this is not a map image per se.

on this basis, a large number of the items categorized as an image of a map are not. - a rough guess looking at the results page Category:Images of maps would be half the images are not maps.

obviously getting image permission isn't easy - but the plus side is that restructuring the categories would be relatively easy right now.

I'd also argue for a more detailed category system based on geographical regions in the same way the geography pages are categorized solar system/planets and heavenly bodies

ocean/body of water

source book or AP

maybe a category for type/scale :urban/countryside/location

usually the images have few tags that help place them in the world. for example learning this map File:Ilizmagorti map final.jpg is of a city on Mediogalti Island in the Arcadian Ocean off western Garund still requires a fair bit of research

finally there seems to be a general (and helpful) naming convention that the last three letters of the name of the map image is "map" (xxxxxx map.jpg) with some notable exceptions File:Goblin Tribes.jpg

how would one go about cleaning up the image names that don't meet that convention - and would you agree that removing the "image of map" category from the cover art is an improvement?

I reformatted the above post for readability but did not alter any content

I agree that some of the images currently categorized in Category:Images of maps should perhaps be moved to Category:Images of map products instead, as they're cover images of products containing maps rather than maps themselves.

The summary parameter of the {{File}} template would be a great place to include information on the surrounding area of the included map. Older images may not currently have {{File}} included on their page, but Oznogon has been in the process of bringing them all up to date as he has time.

Changing the name of a file is as simple as renaming it, using the "Move" button at the top of the page (by where you'd click to edit the article). Just Redirect the article to the name you'd like to use instead.

Thanks for jumping head-first into the wiki project, Stephen! Welcome, and don't hesitate to ask any questions you may have.

A few ideas here:

  • YodaBot could do a regex removal of "keyword\d+\s+\=\s+maps" from this list of map product files, and remove Category:Images of maps from this other list of map product categories. If map product images don't need categorization past Category:Cover art, or if they need manual keyword categorization (ie. by location), this removal action should be enough. I believe the bot command would be python -file:article_list.txt -regex "keyword\d+\s+\=\s+maps" "", with the wikitext of the above list of map product files as the contents of article_list.txt.
  • YodaBot could also regex replace "keyword(\d+)\s+\=\s+maps" with "keyword\1 = map products" on the above list of map product files, per Yoda8myhead's suggestion. This would create the Images of map products category, which could be a subset of Category:Cover art, Category:Images of maps, and/or Category:Artwork by subject. I believe the bot command would be python -file:article_list.txt -regex "keyword(\d+)\s+\=\s+maps" "\1", with the wikitext of the above list of map product files as the contents of article_list.txt.
  • YodaBot could remove "keyword\d+\s+\=\s+maps" and add "Category:Artwork from (product line)" categories, as Fleanetha has been doing manually in map products' "Artwork from" categories, like Category:Artwork from Bigger Basic Flip-Mat being in Category:Artwork from Pathfinder Flip-Mats. (And if we do this for maps, should we consider doing the same product line artwork categorizations for book lines, card lines, etc.?) I believe the bot command would be python -file:article_list.txt -regex "keyword\d+\s+\=\s+maps" ""; python add -file:article_list.txt, with the wikitext of the above list of map product files as the contents of article_list.txt.

To add location categories to maps, we can add the locations as keywords to {{File}}, following the model of categories like Category:Images of Osirion.

YodaBot thinks that Oznobot should be a thing. :-P
I ran all three of the suggested scripts and each time it said that no changes were needed to the listed pages.
I'm not a coder so the scripts may have lost me - if the intent was similar to a Find and Replace, then there must be something out of place in the code - an errant space or something- because there are many images that are marked as category:images of maps that aren't really map images
Fully agreed 77stephen, fixing the categorization without doing it manually is the point of the exercise, but I'm unfortunately out of the country and not really in a great position to do a lot of debugging of the regex at the moment. I'm fiddling with it (and taking Yoda up on OznoBot) as I can, but life won't cooperate for another several days.
