Faydhaans,1 also known as marids (pronounced mah-RIDD),2 are genies from the Elemental Plane of Water.3

Appearance

A faydhaan has blue-green skin, deep blue eyes, flamboyant eyebrows, and pearlescent teeth. Faydhaans stand around 16 feet tall and weigh nearly 2,500 pounds, and are said to have the strength of oceanic currents.4[citation needed]

Ecology

Faydhaans can produce undine offspring with humanoids of the Universe.5

Society

Faydhaans once claimed to be the rightful rulers of the entire Plane of Water before the Universe existed, but have been fractured for ten millennia since the elemental lord Kelizandri killed their last padishah, Niloufar, and destroyed their empire's capital city of Arzanib. However, the faydhaans seem uninterested in fighting Kelizandri's constantly expanding domain, and some scholars believe that the empire was actually destroyed by krakens who infiltrated faydhaan society, something that faydhaans refuse to acknowledge. The disparate faydhaan petty kingdoms regularly vie for power and have little to do with each other otherwise; convincing them to cooperate is notoriously difficult.67

Faydhaans are the most capricious species of genie, something which others of their kind (especially jabalis8) find aggravating and embarrassing. Many become artists and search for an audience in the Universe.4[citation needed]

In order to facilitate peace between one other, faydhaans follow strong rules of hospitality, making them one of the most accessible races for visitors to the Plane of Water. They enjoy guests, particularly performers and traders, and sometimes go out of their way to encourage them. Their cities often provide food and air to foreigners, but trade is infrequent due to the lack of roads.6

Faydhaan shuyookhs

Noble faydhaans, known as faydhaan shuyookhs1 or shazadas,7 are their kind's representatives and renowned for their diplomacy, hospitality, and leadership. They particularly enjoy collecting and using different types of greetings, and guests can impress them by engaging in a back-and-forth game of greetings.9

Their wish magic is accordingly diplomatic in nature, and the results of wishes they grant often aim to please the most people.9

Faydhaan shuyookhs are aficionados of coffee; they import beans from across the planes, roast them with local flavors, and grind and serve their brews from magical dallahs known as faydhaan's dhallahs. Each enchanted dhallah has a faydhaan shuyookh's name engraved on its bottom.10

Relations

Faydhaans are renowned on the Plane of Water for their aptitude in combat and commerce.11 Those in Kelizandrika chafe under the rule of Kelizandri, and their dissent is often the target of the elemental lord's brine dragon minions.12

Faydhaans consider murajaus to have been created as a race of failed royal servants, a creation tale that murajaus disagree with.9
