The Makaitsu are a group of kami who dwell in the Sea of Eels off the coast of the nation of Songbai.12 These kami, ancient spirits created by the deities to protect nature,3[citation needed] who make up the Makaitsu have long served as protectors of Songbai's humble fisherfolk. In the depths of the Sea of Eels dwell enormous predatory eels with strange magical powers. The Makaitsu kami have traditionally kept these monsters at bay, but as of 7211 IC the kami had disappeared without a trace and the massive eels again hunted along Songbai's coast.2
