A flail consists of a weighted striking end connected by a chain to a handle. There are three main types of flails:
- Light flail
- The striking end is often a metal ball, perhaps with spikes, but can be as simple as a metal rod.1
- Heavy flail
- The ball is larger and the handle longer compared to the light flail.2
- Dire flail
- Each end of the handle has a spiked ball connected by a chain.3
