Moon Ladder

The Moon Ladder is a twisted metal spire built by gnome sages as a bridge from the surface of the First World to the numerous moons in the sky. After generations of construction, the tower was completed and began to project a beam of light visible from a hundred miles away. Gnome explorers rode spaceships up the bridge to the moons and returned with fantastic discoveries for 20 years, until the projection device was locked up and the voyages stopped around a century ago.

The gnomes inside the Moon Ladder isolated themselves from the outside world and declared more than half of the tower off-limits to visitors. Those few who continue to be admitted speak of the residents' paranoia and strange tics, and speculate that something dire might have slid down the column of light into the tower's depths.
