Vilma Lochnik is a wealthy widow and owner of half a dozen warehouses in the busy town of Lod near the headwaters of the Marbleflow River in Irriseni province of Hoarwood. Vilma cultivates an image of indifference to the sufferings of the oppressed peasants but is secretly a member of the underground anti-government movement Heralds of Summer's Return and efficient in smuggling refugees out of Irrisen.
