Sir Aeryn Darvengian is a demon-worshiping madman who captured his entire family in 4703 AR by feeding them a paralytic poison in their wine, and then proceeded to sacrifice all of them to his patron, the demon lord Socothbenoth. Following his capture by the Magnimarian authorities, he was thrown in that city's most notorious dungeon, the Hells.
