An apprentice's eye is an uncut but polished jewel, perhaps a cabochon, that has been enchanted to change colour in the presence of a magical aura. It is usually the tool of an apprentice wizard, hence its name, to prevent the inexperienced mage killing themselves by dabbling with magically trapped objects.
