Deletion

Based on the canon changes to the Chelaxian ethnicity, should this category be deleted? The Category:Cheliax/Inhabitants already covers the current meaning of the term "Chelaxian". Should this also be extended to Category:Images of Chelaxians, as most other nations don't have nationality based image categories? Or should image categories for all nationalities be created, such as Category:Images of Osirians? --Rexert (talk) 15:58, 4 April 2025 (UTC)

Flagged the category for the retcon. I don't see any reason to delete it, for the same reasons that we aren't deleting drow and related subjects and categories. The ethnicity was once canon, its members are already categorized, and as long as we're transparent about the changes we don't help any readers by slashing and burning content and categories that we already have.

I don't think we need largely redundant categories for nationalities, in large part because of the Inhabitants categories that you already pointed out.

Re: image categories, exceptions for exceptional subjects are okay. We can just flag Category:Images of Chelaxians and move on. -Oznogon (talk) 17:52, 4 April 2025 (UTC)

The difference is that the term drow doesn't have a new canonical meaning, and they are not being referred to by a different canonical term. Meanwhile, Chelaxian is now a nationality, and all former Chelaxians are intended to be Taldan.

I don't mind maintaining a Chelaxian ethnicity category, as it's canon within the context of older adventures and earlier editions. But, in that case, I think characters within this category should have both the Chelaxian and Taldan ethnicity listed in their infoboxes and categories. Additionally, no characters from Cheliax introduced after the date when the canonical change was established should be added to this category, despite being of the Chelaxian nationality. Perhaps this category should be renamed to reflect that it is intended exclusively for the former ethnicity.

Regarding images, the "Inhabitants categories" are currently only available for articles of inhabitants, not images of inhabitants. Therefore, an image category for each nationality does seem appropriate. Though the Chelaxian ethnicity and nationality would, again, require separation. --Rexert (talk) 20:05, 4 April 2025 (UTC)

"characters within this category should have both the Chelaxian and Taldan ethnicity listed in their infoboxes and categories" is fine with me. I'm even fine with listing only Taldan as long as the discrepancy from the published source is cited with {{Cite canon change/Chelaxian}}.

Adding even more image categorization overhead isn't exciting at all, so I hope you're here for the long haul to maintain it. I probably won't be. -Oznogon (talk) 02:26, 7 April 2025 (UTC)

In my opinion, images are currently under-categorized. The existing categories were likely sufficient a decade ago, when most of them were created, but many more images have been added since then and they're rather difficult to navigate. Hopefully much maintenance won't be required once the majority of categories have been established, and it will just be a matter of assigning them. --Rexert (talk) 04:34, 7 April 2025 (UTC)
