Light writers are photographic devices that combine magic and clockwork technology to capture monochromatic images onto metal plates.1

History

Light writers were invented in late 4721 AR in Absalom.1

Function

A light writer captures light through two flat square metal panels, one larger than the other. The smaller panel positioned at the front of the device focuses light through a glass lens, and a specially treated metal plate is positioned inside the larger panel. A pleated leather tube resembling the bladder of a bellows connects the plates, and a small metal tube pointing forward from the top of the device generates magical light for 20 minutes. The lens focuses and projects the reflected light of the scene onto the treated plate, which slowly over the course of the light's operation becomes engraved with the scene of whatever is in front of the lens.1

The light writer and its subject must remain still for the full 20 minutes or the resulting image will be blurred. The device can be mounted onto a tripod to keep it still during operation and is controlled by a button positioned on a small stick attached to the device by wire.1
