Shambling mounds originated in a different game and were used in the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game under the Open Game License. In the Pathfinder Second Edition Remaster Project, Paizo changed Pathfinder's license to the Open RPG Creative license, preventing shambling mounds from being used going forward.

In Monster Core 295, Paizo introduced sargassum heaps, a new canon creature of the same level filling a similar canon role. Sargassum heaps do not share any other canon details about their creation, equipment, or abilities, and share few details about their appearance.

As of June 2024, the state of shamblers in past canon works is unclear. As it appears unlikely that shamblers will appear in Pathfinder works again, the article has been flagged as legacy content. -Oznogon (talk) 04:26, 18 June 2024 (UTC)
