Dose forced abstaining count?

More of a edge case question for gumiho magic-biology and word interpretation. Dose losing power after one thousand days of abstaining, count if a 3rd-party prevents a gumiho from eating livers or misfortune makes them unavailable like being locked up or trapped in a cave with non-liver-based rations? Dose the word "abstain" entail the gumiho must somewhat consent to rejecting its desire for livers to lose its power?
