Template talk:ArticleSpawner/Magic item
Request template changes (resolved)
The current magic item template is missing the 'aon1e' and 'aon2e' parameters, and the 'source' and 'page' parameters are indented by one too many spaces by default. --Rexert (talk) 22:54, 6 January 2025 (UTC)
- {{Magic item}} did in fact implement aon1e and aon2e and documented, but they weren't added to the usage example or ArticleSpawner, and the wayfinder example was itself outdated on the wayfinder source article. I've added them (and the footnote param) to the documentation and ArticleSpawner, and updated the infobox on wayfinder.
- The template documentation did not have the indentation issue, but the ArticleSpawner template did. I've therefore moved this discussion from Template talk:Magic item since most of its concerns were with {{ArticleSpawner/Magic item}} rather than with {{Magic item}}. -Oznogon (talk) 20:45, 7 January 2025 (UTC)
It might also be helpful to separate the PF1e and PF2e parameters from each other into two distinct groups to clarify which parameters editors need to fill in, and which can be ignored based on their source. While this template page attempts to provide such information, some of it is inaccurate or confusing. Like the 'aura' parameter which applies to some items in both editions despite the page listing it as 1e exclusively. Or the 'slot' parameter; it's obvious which slot a 2e helm belongs in, but should that not be listed because it's a 1e parameter? --Rexert (talk) 22:54, 6 January 2025 (UTC)
- Parameters already designate 1E or 2E in their labels, so these concerns are best applied to the template docs and ArticleSpawner. -Oznogon (talk) 20:45, 7 January 2025 (UTC)
Keeping the edition-specific parameters separate, or at least providing more inline comments to prevent repeatedly checking back with this template page would be helpful. Similar changes might be relevant for the other object templates as well. --Rexert (talk) 22:54, 6 January 2025 (UTC)
- Parameter order in implementation is generally irrelevant in templates, so it's not an issue to change the documentation to make implementing them easier. Changing their order as listed in the template is a separate concern, but not a difficult change to make. -Oznogon (talk) 20:45, 7 January 2025 (UTC)
- I'd also like to mention that some of the 2e items, like talismans, have several different types, with different levels and minor changes in their functionality. The 'alloy orb' listed on page 263 of the GM Core is a great example. It has a level 3, level 8, level 12, level 16 and level 18 type for the same item. I'm unsure how to address this in an item page, and whether any of this information belongs in the item ib. --Rexert (talk) 23:10, 6 January 2025 (UTC)
- This is no different in 2E than in 1E (greater and lesser variants of items and spells, many types and variants of spells; indeed, both are issues for 1E talismans).
- This should ideally be addressed on a help page about items (which doesn't exist), not {{Magic item}}; help content is repurposed for ArticleSpawners, so creating a Help:Writing an article about an item should be a prerequisite of improving the ArticleSpawner. -Oznogon (talk) 20:45, 7 January 2025 (UTC)
- Created Help:Writing an article about an item. I'd rather see it edited than respond to feedback about it, it's better than nothing but that's about it. -Oznogon (talk) 23:00, 7 January 2025 (UTC)
