Salt occurs naturally in the form of a crystalline mineral known as rock salt or halite. Salt is also present in vast quantities in seawater giving it its salinity. Salt is essential for life in general, and saltiness is one of the basic human tastes, so salt is one of the oldest and most ubiquitous food seasonings.1 Salt is the most traded seasoning in the world: it is common and cheap, and can be bought for five sp per half-pound bag.2

Salt is used alchemically as a desiccant and as a catalyst.3

Salt is a necessary component for some magic and rituals, including the ancient occult ritual, spiritual investment, that dates back to the time of Ninshabur.4
