PathfinderWiki:Streamlining article creation
This page is part of a defunct project. See PathfinderWiki:Semantic Data Initiative instead. |
Project goals
With style and content standards, infoboxes, and navboxes for many common classes of articles, consistent article creation can be daunting, especially for new editors. This project's goal is to streamline consistent article creation to increase participation and reduce maintenance.
Implementation
Article creation tools
The InputBox extension provides an easy way to take advantage of existing MediaWiki URL parameters to prepopulate input fields with templated data and instructions. We can use these features to make basic tools, ready-to-edit markup templates, and inline guides for editors.
Extensions like Semantic Forms may also be able to prepopulate content as well as formatting and markup.
Updating and adding documentation
Some of our Help pages predate new page types and new infobox features. We can update these resources and integrate them with the default page editing tools.
Progress
This project was created on February 1, 2015 by Oznogon and closed by them on August 18, 2023.
Resources generated for this project
- Help:Cheatsheet, adapted from Wikipedia to provide a quick reference for common formatting markup. Help:Editing, linked by default on every editing form as "Editing help", now redirects to this cheatsheet instead of a dead link.
- {{ArticleSpawner}}, which uses InputBox to prepopulate editing forms for new articles. See Template:ArticleSpawner/doc for details, and User:Oznogon/Sandbox/ArticleSpawner for examples. This is implemented as the optional Article Template Toolbox, which can be enabled from a user's Gadget Preferences. -Oznogon (talk) 01:00, 9 December 2016 (UTC)
- Also see the ArticleSpawner template pages, like Template:ArticleSpawner/Adventure, and documentation that appears above the editing form when using an ArticleSpawner, like Template:ArticleSpawner/Adventure/doc. -Oznogon (talk) 07:36, 2 February 2015 (UTC)
- {{Cite complex}} and
'''{{Contents}}''', designed to help document larger real-world products such as Adventure Path issues, multi-chapter hardcover sourcebooks, and multi-author works. {{Cite complex}} greatly simplifies the wikicode necessary to create citation templates for such products, and '''{{Contents}}''' can reuse that work to generate lists of contents for product pages. Both of these can greatly reduce the time spent mucking with wikicode. -Oznogon (talk) 01:00, 9 December 2016 (UTC)
Planned resources
- Officially integrating {{ArticleSpawner}}s into the wiki. Ideas include an article creation portal similar to the User:Oznogon/Sandbox/ArticleSpawner mockup, and adding {{ArticleSpawner}}s to corresponding Help pages and Portals.
TODOs
- Finish documenting {{ArticleSpawner}} article types that don't have documentation pages, using {{ArticleSpawner/Adventure/doc}} as a template.
- Running List of finished templates: Accessory, Adventure, City, Person
- Still to do: Biography, Book, Class, Cosmos, Creature, Deity, Hellknight Orders, Magic item, Nation, Organization, Plane, Prestige class, Region, Ship, Tales webfiction
