Target

According to Princes of Darkness, Book of the Damned Volume 1, each malebranche is transformed for the purpose of conquering a planar realm or a Material Plane realm, while according to the hardback Book of the Damned and Planar Adventures, their targets are restricted to mortal worlds. "Malebranche are horned devils transformed so as to conquer a mortal world in Hell’s name." Pg. 220 notes that horned devils (cornugons) are dispatched to other planes, but does not include the malebranche.

Planar Adventures pg. 192

"The least of these three ranks are the malebranche, quasi-deities who have each been charged with conquering a specific Material Plane world in Hell’s name."
