Talk:The Compass Stone
Categorizing multi-author serial fiction
We had the discussion on Elaine Cunningham's talk page about whether to list individual chapters from the same author. I assume individual chapters by different authors would be handled the same way. But how should we handle categorizing chapters?
Currently, a chapter of Pathfinder's Journal does not have a category applied to it on the product page for the book it appears in, thus Crown of Fangs does not belong in Category:Works by James L. Sutter even though "Pink Like Me" can be found in this volume. Instead, the main article for the novella as a whole belongs in the Works by xxx categories for all authors who contributed.
Part of me feels that we should include categories on the product pages, as someone looking to get all books by Jay Thompson would simply go to the category and see which two volumes he needed to buy and wouldn't be helped by being led to this discussion's page. But I also believe that the complete whole should belong to the Works by xxx categories as well. And there were get into some weirdness, because we're basically crediting people twice for the same product.
Is that confusing? Am I making a big deal out of nothing? If there were a short story anthology called Pathfinder's Exloits with ten stories by different authors, would each story get it's own article, or would the whole book just be categorized as being by all ten authors? Obviously that's a bridge we're not yet to, but this is a similar situation and the precedent we set here will most likely be applied to future works as well. (And James L. Sutter and Erik Mona have both said that short story anthologies were a certainty but gave no timeline.)

Cleanup Redirects
I moved Pathfinder's Journal (fiction) to The Compass Stone to bring the story under its current title (when compiled as an ePub) and to lessen the need for disambiguation between the novella and the series that later used its name. There are still a number of pages that link to Pathfinder's Journal (fiction) which should probably be cleaned up to reference The Compass Stone as the novella's title to avoid future confusion. —Yoda8myhead 07:34, 14 June 2011 (UTC)
