A ushanka of the northlands is a hat made from a thick animal pelt with earflaps that can be folded up or down. This animal always comes from cold northern climes. The ushanka helps the wearer improve her survival instincts and protects against cold; when the earflaps are down, she also gains additional protection against loud sounds at the cost of not hearing mundane noises as well.[1]
