Alicorns are massive, winged variants of unicorns. An alicorn is the rarely occurring result of a unicorn's exposure to large sources of magical power,1 or according to some theories from crossbreeding with a wild pegasus.2

In magic

Alicorn hair shed from their mane can help stabilize a dying creature, and glows when it touches a living creature. It can also be used as a spell catalyst.3

In magic items

As with unicorn horns, alicorn horns have magical properties. For example, an alicorn trigger is a magical jezail that engages a preserved alicorn horn mounted beneath its barrel to produce a beam of light so powerful that it can not only blind but burn creatures in its path. Such horns are often bestowed willingly by the alicorn at its natural death.4
