Ayrzul's Blight

From PathfinderWiki

Ayrzul's Blight is a phenomenon of primal earth magic has plagued the Plane of Wood for eons.1 It was brought back by the repelled armies of Verilorn that unsuccessfully attacked Ayrzul's realm, the Blistering Labyrinth.2 Ayrzul then attacked the Plane of Wood himself and embedded parts of his Blistering Labyrinth into the Plane of Wood, such as the Blighted Labryinth.3 Eventually, the Plane of Wood, along with the Plane of Metal were seemingly lost.4 How the Plane of Wood was hidden is unknown, though some speculate one or both of the elemental lords of wood performed the act, or that the plane sealed itself off.5

Effects

Ayrzul's Blight is most potent in places on the Plane of Wood where large, jagged formations of stone punch through the plane's fabric. Radioactive energy circulates through creature's blood and plant's. It can petrify bark and bone, or wither flesh. It quickly promotes harsh mutations in affected bodies and the minds of flora and fauna. Eventually, blighted entities that survive death solely desire to spread the disease or find and bind with others that are similarly blighted. Only powers like a deity or an artifact can undo this mutation. Plants and creatures connected to elemental wood are especially susceptible to this plague.1

Known outbreaks

Outbreaks of Ayrzul's Blight in the Plane of Wood's tree ecosystems can result in a cascading mutation of an entire ecosystem's species that creates the symbiotic blight bonded creature families.6

The Plane of Wood has lost entire cities and biomes to the blight.7 It infected the realm of the six Tuber Lords despite their collapsing of the entry tunnels to the realm, and it likely killed them.8

The elemental lord Shumunue bears a large, if not life-threatening, patch of Ayrzul's Blight on her left flank.9 Shumunue's confidant, Asim bint Attaar, is the foremost expert on the blight, and has developed many pastes, waxes, and polishing oils to relieve some of the pain of the blight,10 and continues to look for a cure for the elemental lord.11

Remedy

Though not a cure, kolobo oil from the Kolobo Rainforest is prized for its protection and temporary relief from the blight.12
