Hoary muntjacs are a carnivorous offshoot of the deer family that adapted to life in freezing mountain ranges by becoming effective predators.1

Appearance

From a distance, a hoary muntjac could easily be mistaken for a particularly large, hairy deer, but instead of a deer's placid face it has a wolf-like muzzle often still red from the blood of its last prey. It possesses vestigial horns so small as to be almost unnoticeable beneath its head's shaggy fur.1

Habitat and ecology

Hoary muntjacs live high in the coldest mountains to which they are ideally suited. Their feet allow them to cross ice and snow much quicker than most other creatures. They often hunt when the weather is at its most violent, using snow storms to hide their pursuit. Hoary muntjacs are social creatures that hunt in packs, and though they can survive for short periods on plants, they much prefer the taste of flesh.1

Abilities

A hoary muntjac can breathe a small cone of freezing mist to help subdue its prey, and can perceive a creature's body heat and actually track them by it in cold environments, which is part of the reason why they hunt only in freezing mountains.1
