PathfinderWiki talk:Point of view

From PathfinderWiki

This seems pretty straight forward to me. If we're voting, I say we go ahead and make this a policy.--Aeakett 19:20, 20 May 2009 (UTC)

Yeah, the lack of discussion on the topic means that either everyone's ok with it or the community at large is ambivalent enough to not have noticed it or not care in the first place. Since we've been picking up momentum recently, let's see if this discussion goes anywhere. If we don't have any objections or an ongoing discussion regarding proposed changes by Friday night, I say yes to making it official. That said, we link and refer to the Manual of style several times on this page. Perhaps this is something else we should consider making? I adapted the POV policy from Memory Alpha, but their MoS wasn't really applicable to our uses. --yoda8myhead 23:14, 20 May 2009 (UTC)
Maybe we could undertake to pare down Wikipedia's MoS for our use. Even if we just used that as a starting point, we could then add sections to deal with stuff specific to us? --Aeakett 23:42, 20 May 2009 (UTC)
Sounds good to me. I might have time to tackle that this weekend, but can't promise it.--yoda8myhead 23:56, 20 May 2009 (UTC)

Proposal changed to policy by yoda8myhead 19:30, 22 May 2009 (UTC)

Meta included

Logging for posterity; added the Meta namespace, which contains progress boxes, inclusion initiative progress, and unincorporated sources lists, as a non-canon namespace for PoV purposes. -Oznogon (talk) 21:01, 14 January 2024 (UTC)

Increase allowances of non-POV content in canon subject articles

Changes Proposed
This section contains suggested changes to this policy. Please discuss the suggested changes here.
For further information please see the policy revision process.

To reflect the focus of the wiki's most active editors, I propose changing this policy to expand allowed content that is not from an in-universe point of view.

For example, many articles now have prominent tables listing real-world works in which that subject appears. Edition- and revision-specific changes have become inescapable on several subjects, such as deities, dragons, golems, classes and other player options, spells and rituals, magic items, creature types, and the iconic characters. The sweeping and often fundamental nature of these changes go above and beyond efforts to flag and label them in the canon policy or provide a dedicated space for this information with the Meta page guidelines.

Specifically, I propose replacing the following.

  • From "In-universe":

Change the heading to "Objective and relevant in-universe".

Replace:

PathfinderWiki's primary point of view is that of a character inside the fictional Pathfinder campaign setting – an archivist in the Pathfinder Society.

With:

PathfinderWiki's primary point of view is that of an objective observer within the current state of the Pathfinder campaign setting.

Replace:

Think of in-universe PathfinderWiki articles as part of an encyclopedia that exists in the Pathfinder universe.

With:

Think of in-universe PathfinderWiki articles as part of an encyclopedia that exists in the current state of the Pathfinder campaign setting.
  • From "Citing sources and background information", replace:
Background information and apocrypha is considered to fall under the "real world" POV and, as such, should be restricted to the appropriate sections. In general, this sort of information is not applicable on in-universe articles.

with:

Background information or apocrypha from a "real world" point of view are best suited for a subject's Meta namespace page. If a subject's has fundamental details that are specific to specific editions or revisions of the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game rules, or if changes between those editions or revisions have had a canon effect, those details should be included in footnotes.
  • From "Publication point of view", replace:
This includes wiki articles on books, adventures, series, authors, artists, organized play, etc. that naturally are not part of the Pathfinder campaign setting itself.

with:

This includes wiki articles on books, adventures, series, authors, artists, organized play, player options, specific mechanics, etc. that naturally are not part of the Pathfinder campaign setting itself.

Replace:

{[xt|real}}

with:

{{badges|real}}

As there has been little application or enforcement of this policy since the Pathfinder Second Edition Remaster Project, these changes should result in few or no changes for administrators while granting editors increased freedom and clarity to continue making the sweeping changes to content already in progress. -Oznogon (talk) 01:29, 9 December 2024 (UTC)
