Popobawa
Popobala
(Creature)

Popobawas1 are shapechangers that travel through populated areas and feed on the negative emotions they create.2

Appearance

A popobawa has a lean and muscular build, standing five feet tall and weighing 100 pounds, with a twelve-foot wingspan.3[citation needed] In its natural form, it resembles a humanoid bat with a single eye.4

It can take on the appearance of a human or a bat at will.2 In human form, the only sign of a popobawa's identity is its long, thin fingers, which can lead to actual humans with those traits being persecuted by their communities.5 A popobawa can also be identified by its stench, which sickens those in the immediate vicinity and lingers in the popobawa's home.67

Abilities

A popobawa has access to spells that mesmerize its victims, which facilitates its spreading of suffering throughout the land.6

Ecology

While popobawas feed on humanoid flesh and blood, they prefer the taste of prey in a state of fear, despair, or anguish, and will prolong their victims' suffering.4 They can consume regular food and drink in humanoid form, but it provides no sustenance.5

A popobawa's shapechanging ability allows it to live in populated villages while it feeds, but due to the creature's vanity, it tolerates no external threats to the village it has chosen. Because of this, popobawas are solitary in nature.5

On Golarion

Popobawas are among the beings that live in Saventh-Yhi.8
