Smoldering Forests

The Smoldering Forests is the name given to the various forests that cover many of the outer reaches of Hell's sixth layer Malebolge. Malebolge itself is one vast fortress, its entirety criss-crossed by vast fortress walls creating an almost infinite number of enclosures, each of which contains a different type of terrain used by Hell's armies in their never ending training. Towards the outer limits of Malebolge more and more of these enclosures are filled with Smoldering Forests, eerie woodlands of poisonous trees, fire-blackened and always on the point of combustion. The Smoldering Forests smoke endlessly, a snowfall of their own ash covering the ground between the trees. The trees of the Smoldering Forests are in fact made of damned souls and are often hacked down for timber or to clear space for armies of devils to practice military manoeuvrers.
