Staff
- For other meanings of "Staff", please see Staff (disambiguation).
A magical staff is a shaft or pole capable of storing spells. Each staff can hold many spells, which makes them distinct from wands, and they might also bestow passive effects or abilities.12
Usage
A staff is activated by holding it in at least one hand or appendage and invoking the desired spell from the staff. Staves can be used normally only by particular spellcasters, such as spellcasters of the divine magic tradition when casting a divine spell.
A spellcaster can prepare a staff daily, using the caster's power to fill the staff with magical charges each day.1
As a weapon
Staves can be wielded as bludgeoning weapons, with either one or two hands.12
Construction
Staves are typically 4 to 7 feet long, 2 to 3 inches in thickness, and weigh 5 pounds. Most are wooden with a gemstone, device, or metal cap on one or both ends, and carved or runic embellishments, but they can be made of bone, metal, glass, or other materials.3[citation needed]
