Categories

Subcategories

Problem to address: get a list of subcategories available to a category - it would be good practice to automatically add these when creating a category.

R is Race
R/History
R/Inhabitants
R/Nations
R/Organizations
R/Settlements
R/Tribes
Humans get ethnicities: Vudran, Ulfen, etc

Help for making category pages

Problem addressed: creating a category page: what parent categories should go in a particular category page and in what format? There is no help for this.

N/Organizations would automatically require:

Concept 2: Help to set up a suite of categories for a new article

I think, on reflection, the generic /y category template idea below is too complex. A simpler way, and what I have needed, is help to set up a suite of categories around a new article (nation, settlement, etc.) This I'll play with here.

Concept of Generic /y Category Template

X/Inhabitants

x/Inhabitants Today

Example for x/Inhabitants where x is any category needing /Inhabitants

x exists today in the wiki for:

  • Alignments
    • [but not consistently; the seemingly standard way (supported by Help page) is 'Chaotic good inhabitants' not 'Chaotic good/Inhabitants' => Decision then standardization needed
  • Cities/Settlements
    • [currently both types are children of Category:Inhabitants by settlement as is a planar city]
    • => Decision needed on retaining split between city and settlement - wouldn't it be easier to drop city and just have settlement throughout wiki?
  • City Districts
    • => Decision - is this too much detail? - could not a person just be a member of a city/settlement? Some people are district based, though, and the information could be useful.
  • Continents
  • Darklands and Darklands settlements
  • Nations & Historical Nations
  • Planes
  • Races/Monsters/Human ethnicities
  • Region/Geographical areas
    • e.g., Darkmoon Vale

Most of the above seem pretty sensible having x/Inhabitants format.

Other categories seem better with a different term for people - /Followers, /Servants, /Members and should be retained but /Followers gets pulled up into a parent category called 'Inhabitants by Religion', which seems odd; ditto /Members to 'Inhabitants by Organization'

Some other categories would seem strange having x/Inhabitants format, e.g., Class/Inhabitants, where just Clerics seems better, ditto Occupations. This is for categories where the category is obviously related to a person.

The help page for 'Person' states

The term "person" is used quite loosely to mean any distinct inhabitant of the Pathfinder Chronicles campaign setting. An article about a person could be about human, or a dwarf, or even a dragon.

=> Decision: would /Person be a better and more consistent term for PCs and NPCs? This would mean we could drop /Followers, /Servants, /Members and just have /Person for all of those. Also see this debate Forum:Searching for a Subcategory Name for other suggestions.

Generic Template for X/Inhabitants

For now, assuming things stay pretty much as is, would a template work for any page of the format with a help page to guide?

If you want to create a Category page of the form , here is a template for easily creating it and choosing the correct parent categories in which to place your new category:

1. Create the page

2. Add the following template to the page (cut & paste works fine)

<!-- change X to what X stands for in your category name -->

<!-- delete this whole line if X is not a city district;
change 'Settlement' to the name of the city in which the city district is found -->

<!-- delete this whole line if X is not a continent -->

<!-- delete this whole line if X is not a city or settlement -->
<!-- delete this whole line if X is not a city or settlement;
change 'Country' to the name of the country in which the city or settlement is found -->

<!-- delete this whole line if X is not a nation or an historical nation -->
<!-- delete this whole line if X is not a nation or an historical nation;
change 'Continent' to the name of the continent in which the nation or an historical nation is found -->

<!-- delete this whole line if X is not a plane -->
<!-- delete this whole line if X is not a demiplane -->

<!-- delete this whole line if X is not a race or monster -->
<!-- delete this whole line if X is not a subrace or subcategory of a monster, e.g., a red dragon -->

<!-- delete this whole line if X is not a human ethnicity -->
<!-- delete this whole line if X is not a human ethnicity -->

3. Amend the template as described for your type of category page

4. Save the page

5. Test the links work as desired and seem your category appears consistent with others of its type in its parent categories

X/Settlements

X/Settlements Today

Example for X/Settlements where x is any category needing /Settlements

X exists today in the wiki for:

xxxx

Summaries of x/Settlements
  • Settlements/Alignment (0) - duplicate of Settlements by alignment and probably needs deleting
  • Settlements/Nation (1) - duplicate of Settlements by nation and probably needs deleting
  • Settlements by alignment (9)
  • Settlements by continent (1)
  • Settlements by race (7)
  • Settlements by plane (2)
  • Settlements by nation (21)
  • Metropolises (0) - defined by whom?
  • Riddleport (2) - clearly in the wrong place

Decision: Does Settlements go x/y or x by y for summaries?
