Bogwid

Bogwid
(Creature)

Bogwids are aberrations that combine features from toads and octopi.12

Appearance

Bogwids are bloated green creatures with the head of a fang-mouthed toad and eight octopus tentacles. Their larvae live in fleshy spheres embedded on its back. They emit a persistent and sickeningly strong scent.12 Most bogwids live for about 10 years, and their flesh gradually turns grayer and drier with age.1

Abilities

Bogwid tentacles can transmit a disease known as bogwid fever,12 which weakens those who suffer from it and causes persistent bleeding.2 Alchemists often pay well for the glands in bogwid tentacles that produce the fluids which transmit this disease.1

Habitat and ecology

Almost all bogwids lead solitary lives in bogs and swamps, both coastal and inland. Some live closer to warm populated areas but are often hunted if spotted by residents12 due to the significant bounties often placed on their heads.1

Bogwids move through swamps to find food for their larvae, which travel on their backs. They often hunt nocturnally using stealth, camouflage, proximity to natural hazards, and patience to ambush lone larger creatures, including humanoids and crocodiles. More desperate bogwids have also attacked small groups. A bogwid's lair is often surrounded by corpses with a large explosive hole in their chests.12 Bogwids that manage to survive longer than normal are often overpowered by their own offspring and consumed in the same manner.1

After killing its prey or finding carrion, a bogwid's larvae jump onto it and battle each other for the food they need to survive. The victors dig into the corpse's flesh to spend the following two weeks consuming it, with a full-grown bogwid emerging from the rotting remains. Within a week after maturing, a bogwid asexually spawns more larvae on its back.2

Bogwids are violently sensitive to cold and attempt to destroy anything that saps warmth or emits frigidity.2

On Golarion

Bogwids have been encountered in the Mushfens.3
