Cindermaw, also known as the Clan-Eater,1 is a cave worm imbued with elemental fire that is mythologically feared by Shoanti tribes in the Cinderlands of Varisia, the home of its feeding grounds. Its fame has elevated Cindermaw to near-deific status among the Shoanti, something the vain, egotistical worm is uniquely capable of understanding and exploiting.2

Appearance

Cindermaw resembles a cave worm with charred black hide carved by veins of glowing magma-like heat.2

Background

Cindermaw gained its elemental properties after devouring a Thassilonian ruin containing a portal to the Plane of Fire. This consumption not only empowered it but also awakened it to sentience and extended its natural lifespan.2

Abilities

Cindermaw's elemental nature grants it unusual resilience even for a cave worm, as well as the ability to breathe fire. Contact with fire rejuvenates it, and it can move with unusual pace over land or even through the air as long as it remains in contact with flames.2

In Varisian culture

Cindermaw's prominence in Varisia is felt in several aspects of the region's culture, especially among Shoanti peoples, among whom it is known as the Clan-Eater.1

Harrow

Varisian Harrow readings sometimes interpret the card of the Bear—in its forceful, powerful, and remorseless destruction—as representing Cindermaw.3

Shurak

The Shoanti warrior Skurak encountered Cindermaw in its feeding grounds and was eaten by the worm, but cut his way out of its belly with a dagger. People who can accomplish the same feat gain significant respect among Shoanti tribes.1
