Fen mosquito swarm
Mosquito swarm
Fen mosquito swarms, sometimes referred to simply as mosquito swarms,1 are composed of unusually large and vicious fen mosquitoes.2 These swarms can suck even a human completely dry of their blood in a relatively short period of time.12
Appearance
The mosquitoes that compose these swarms are visually distinguished from most mosquitos only by their slightly larger size. The swarm resembles a low-lying, dark cloud that can move against the wind.1
Habitat and ecology
Mosquitoes of such swarms are particularly sensitive to heat and humidity, and are unable to survive without both.1 They typically inhabit only tropical swamps or wet bogs, but can seasonally range further in humid areas into riverlines or waterfront settlements.2
Male mosquitoes die soon after mating, but females live on and seek blood for the next generation to consume. Swarms are usually composed entirely of female mosquitoes. A mosquito swarm sucks the blood of any creature and can also transmit the disease known as pyrexic malaria.12
On Golarion
In the Inner Sea region, mosquito swarms of this type are normally active only around the Mwangi Expanse, particularly the dense tropical forests like the Screaming Jungle.1
