Hellknights embody order in its purest form, beginning with their own hierarchy and strict system of ranks.12

Lictor / Vicarius

The lictor (or vicarius if promoted from the signifers) is the general of a Hellknight order.3 Currently, the Order of the Gate is the only existing branch of the Hellknights led by a vicarius.14

Master/Mistress of Blades

The master, mistress,1 or myx of blades is colonel of a Hellknight order, equal in rank to a paravicar, and answers only to the order's lictor.3

Paravicar

The paravicar, the leader of an order's signifers, is equal in rank to a master or mistress of blades and answers only to the order's lictor.13

Paralictor

Paralictors are high-ranking Hellknight officers, similar to majors,3 ranking below the master of blades or the paravicar.1

Maralictor

Maralictors are mid-level Hellknight officers ranking below the paralictors.1 Maralictors are similar to lieutenants. Maralictors with titular duties or concerns—such as the relatively common arms-maralictors, field-maralictors, and gate-maralictors—are of lesser rank. 3

Hellknight

See also: Hellknight (prestige class)

Hellknights are the rank-and-file seasoned knights of the order.13

Signifer

See also: Hellknight signifer

Signifers are Hellknights who specialize in magic spellcasting.15 By law of the Measure, signifers rank nominally below rank-and-file Hellknights, who have the authority to give orders to spellcasters on the battlefield—with the exception of the Order of the Gate, whose bylaws rank its signifers above its Hellknights.6

Armiger

Armigers are Hellknights' squires, not yet indoctrinated as full members of an order.7 To gain the status of Hellknight, armigers must first pass a trial known as the Hellknight Test6 (or simply as the Test).8 In the Hellknight Test, a would-be Hellknight must fight to the death against a devil summoned from the depths of Hell.6
