Mother Jackal is the ancient benefactor of House Ahnkamen of Absalom. An ancient and laid-back Leng ghoul, she lives a life of peak macabre luxury.1

Appearance

In her true form, Mother Jackal is a Leng ghoul as big as a small elephant.2 Most only know her as Great-Aunt Maut, a gaunt old woman with a dirty humour.13

Associates

Mother Jackal carefully watches for convicted wizards and alchemists, freeing them and inducting them into her private cult, the Eaters of Knowledge. House Ahnkamen's influence over the judiciary makes it easy to occasionally send corpses to her.4

Only the highest-ranking members of House Ahnkamen are aware of the truth about Mother Jackal.3 Scion Lady Neferpatra Ahnkamen relieves some of her political pressure by letting Mother Jackal make the occasional decision concerning the house. Neferpatra dislikes delegating so much power to Mother Jackal, but cannot act against her due to ancient pacts.5 Since Neferpatra believes in the judiciary's neutrality and Mother Jackal thinks that fidgeting over a problem that lasts less than a decade is a waste of time, House Ahnkamen has remained neutral in the contest to succeed Gyr of House Gixx.4

Background

Mother Jackal burrowed from Leng to Absalom centuries ago, and quickly seized control of House Ahnkamen, long before the house moved from Osirion to Absalom. Her magical powers allowed the first Ahnkamen settlers to rise in power in Absalom's judiciary branch.43

Possessions

Over the centuries, Mother Jackal has turned the basements beneath the Ahnkamen Estate into a complex consisting of temple-caverns to the Outer Gods, ritual chambers for the Eaters of Knowledge, a library with obscure books, and a larder where corpses from prisons are left to ripen. Mother Jackal's sanctum is decorated in a pre-Osirian style, where a massive, formless, pitch black alien thing dwells. Security is provided by unwitting guards, Mother Jackal's illusions and abjurations, and the alien creature if necessary.3
