Cherufes are eighteen-foot-tall, reptilian humanoid beasts glowing with intense inner heat. Creatures of fire, cherufes are healed by heat and are capable of living for millennia as long as they remain in close proximity to very high temperatures; as such, they are most often encountered living within volcanic mountains.

Their extensive lifespans and their power over earthquakes and volcanoes often leads to cherufes becoming objects of worship among the communities located close to their mountain homes. The beasts often prove cruel and fickle gods, controlling their worshippers through the threat of their own exaggerated destructive powers and demanding living sacrifices to toy with and torment.1[citation needed]
