Reptiles are cold-blooded animals broadly organized into crocodilians,1 dinosaurs,2 galvanoscales,3 lizards,1 pterosaurs,4 snakes, and turtles. Most reptilian creatures have four limbs, barring snakes who have none.1

Features

Reptiles are a diverse group of species that might be best defined as animals that are neither birds nor mammals. Most have long bodies and tails, long pointed heads with thin mouths and small nostrils, long jaws, side-facing eyes, and many teeth. Most also have thin skin protected by hard dermal or epidermal scales or spines, sometimes with a bone-armored base;1 turtles in particular have hard, flat shells into which they can retract their more exposed bodies.5 Reptiles might live in salt or fresh water, on land, or amphibiously.1

In non-animal creatures

Many supernatural creatures or types of beasts have reptilian features or resemble specific types of reptiles, most prominently dragons and draconic relatives,2 but also creatures such as elemental salamanders,6 basilisks,7 destrachans,8 hodags,9 and orms.10 Some unique creatures, such as Cuetzmonquali, also have reptilian features.11

Reptilian humanoids

Several types of humanoids are reptilian in nature or have reptilian features, including kobolds,12 iruxi,13 nagaji,14 reptoids,[citation needed] vault giants,15 and xulgaths.16 Iruxi have accepted, if begrudgingly, the designation of "lizardfolk" by other peoples based on their resemblance to lizards.13
