Clockwork spy
(Creature)

A clockwork spy is a tiny winged spider-like clockwork construct designed for reconnaissance and surveillance. Each is capable of recording nearby sounds into a gemstone embedded within its body, which can only contain one recording that cannot be overwritten. Occasionally, skilled clockwork artificers will be able to build clockwork spies with multiple gemstones for multiple recordings before the clockwork spy must be restocked.1 Since clockwork spies are not designed for combat, they prefer to flee if caught.2[citation needed] Most clockwork spies have some sort of self-destruct mechanism in place should they be captured.1

Variants

A clockwork serpent spy is a clockwork spy in serpentine form.3
