Lorelei
(aquatic)
Loreleis, also called murmur stones, are large stony aquatic aberrations that resemble sea anemones with a humanoid-like face. They use magical murmurs to lure sailors to their deaths.1
Appearance
A lorelei resembles a stony sea anemone with the body of a humanoid face and poisonous tentacles that resemble hair. Their bodies, without the tentacles, are 9 feet tall and weigh 2,000 pounds.1
Abilities
Loreleis can speak and understand the Thalassic language and Common tongues. They can swim, move on land, and climb, and are resistant to the cold and immune to sonic forms of harm. They can magically create whirlpools and create captivating murmurs that draw creatures towards it, including mindless undead.1
Ecology and habitat
Loreleis usually lurk by themselves in the shadows of rocky shoals, seaside cliffs, or ocean trenches. They partially conceal themselves in crashing waves or rushing rivers, while their skin camouflages them as rocks.
Loreleis are naturally solitary and dislike having peaceful contact with other living creatures. They emerge from their hiding spot to torment living passersby and spend its time wrecking ships and drowning sailors when not pursuing a more complex scheme.1
In society
Some scholars believe that loreleis were once a beautiful fey species that became cursed, and cite how they behave similarly to fey creatures such as nereids, nixies, and sirens.1
