Okojokami
Okojokami is an ancient kami of the Bunkatsu River and the greatest of the kami existing in the Forest of Spirits. Due to his age and extent, he is considered by some to be the primary guardian of the entire forest. Usually resting, he infrequently takes physical form and is rarely seen.1
Appearance
In art, Okojokami is depicted as a snow-white ermine resting his head upon the trees, body sprawling the full expanse of the Forest. His two tails are tipped in continuously burning, wiry black fur. Further contrasting his white coat are his scaled red legs with dragon-like claws. The few who meet Okojokami face to face observe his whiskers glowing with the eerie blue commonly associated with the outlines of powerful kami.12
Background
Not much is definitively known about the kami elder. A common supposition claims he is related to water dragons. One scholar asserts that in the story of Zaokoyu, a samurai of the Teikoku Shogunate who had taken too much land and lumber from the forest,3 it was Okojokami who had punished the transgressing noble.1
