Onwu azu
The onwu azu (meaning flying death in the dialects spoken in the western Mwangi Expanse coast) is a species of piranha-like saltwater flying fish.1
Appearance
Onwu azus are four-foot-long, piranha-like fish with fin-spans of over six feet, and can weigh close to 90 pounds. Their skin is generally dark blue or brown, and their pectoral fins are shimmering red.1
Ecology
Onwu azus are born in rivers and migrate to oceans during their adolescence. Near the end of their lives, they come back to their birthplace to spawn and die shortly afterwards.1
Onwu azus are fast swimmers and are capable of gliding over the waves with their pectoral fins, preferring the flesh of land dwellers to that of marine animals. When spotting prey, a school of onwu azus will soar, hurl and attach themselves to their food with a hard-to-break suction grip, biting incessantly with their sharp teeth, eventually killing the prey through shock and blood loss, then feeding before returning to the water. Onwu azus can survive up to five minutes out of the water, but prefer to bull rush air-breathing prey to knock them down to the water where the rest of the school awaits.1
