Pontia was the daughter of Patroclus Jeggare, a widely respected member of House Jeggare.7 According to Varian, her conceiving and bearing Varian as a bastard aiuvarin son—at the age of 19 after a dalliance between her and the elf Variel Morgethai in Greengold, Kyonin8—had "broken (Patroclus') heart", and her declaration that she would not marry or bear more children further damaged her relationship with her father.7

Pontia had in fact fallen in love with Variel, and according to Variel she had asked him to travel with her from Kyonin to Cheliax, which he refused to do out of a desire to avoid becoming Forlorn and to continue his pursuit of the elven concept of the Brightness.9 Pontia had also kept Varian's existence a secret from Variel.10

Nonetheless, Patroclus educated Varian in House Jeggare's relations and holdings over three years, then legally and permanently declared Varian to be his legitimate heir, defying other branches of House Jeggare.7 Variel gifted the Red Carriage to Pontia, unknowingly on Varian's 16th birthday.1112 Pontia in turn gifted the carraige to Varian, suggesting to him that it was his father's "legacy" to him.10 She died approximately a decade later.13
