Temple of the Eclipse

From PathfinderWiki

The Temple of the Eclipse is one of Mzali's oldest structures, but as of 4710 AR the temple's importance as the site of Dajermube's attempted ascension to divinity had been forgotten. The Shrine of the Eclipse that stands on the surface above the temple was also known as the Shrine of Dajermube.12

Structure

The shrine is made of sandstone, and its interior walls are decorated with depictions of eclipses. Its ceilings are 30 feet tall, lowering to 20 feet in the temple levels beneath.2

History

The shrine was founded in opposition to the Council of Mwanyisa's takeover of Mzali, which was followed by an attempt to erase the Old Sun Gods from history. A group of people built the shrine as a center for community events in Mzali-Jimbuani in order to preserve the secrecy of the larger temple beneath.

Dajermube, a descendant of the Old Sun God Chohar, led rebels against the Council's actions and preservation efforts for information of the Old Sun Gods in the temple. In the process she learned of her own divine lineage and the process of ascension, then intended to become a new sun god to aid in her people's liberation.

However, the Council attacked the temple with golems,3 slaughtered nearly every person within and all of the residents of Mzali-Jimbuani, and killed Dajermube with a crossbow bolt seconds before the ritual's completion.4 Her sudden death mid-transformation left her soul in a state of limbo as a nemhaith that lasted thousands of years.56

Over the millennia the temple became overrun with the golems from the Council's assault on Dajermube's ritual, bilokos, and the graveknight of Umandayo, a former champion of Dajermube.7

In 4704 AR, part of the temple collapsed in a flood that deposited ancient works and items along the Pasuango River's banks. Agents of Walkena retrieved most of these items and secured them against being used to harm Walkena, in some cases even attributing accurate prophecies from the Old Sun Gods recovered from the works to Walkena. The many dangers within successfully killed most tomb raiders and deterred others from discovering anything else of value (or any potential threats to Walkena) for years after.2

However, a group of heroes associated with the Bright Lions—a rebel group fighting Walkena in Mzali—traversed the temple and freed Dajermube's trapped soul at some time around 4721 AR, and her apotheosis successfully completed. She then aided the heroes in their battle against Walkena's avatar.58
