Creation

Core Rulebook 605 describes what occurs upon the creation of a gold nodule aeon stone, and aeon stones have the Uncommon trait, suggesting that their supply is not necessarily limited. However, there is no information in Core Rulebook or GM Core on how to create new aeon stones in modern-day Golarion.

Pathfinder First Edition provided construction requirements for ioun stones, as it does for all other magic items, though the presence of First Edition creation mechanics does not indicate how widely known the methods are in-universe.

The Lost Outpost describes the Spindle Solution, an Azlanti Empire division depicted as the creators of the spindle series of ioun stones. Lost Outpost 47–48 depicts an ioun stone-crafting assembly line and generally describes the manufacturing process, and Lost Outpost 50 describes the existence of books of research into their creation. However, they do not suggest that the player characters would be capable of learning how to craft ioun stones, and these sources are suggested as being worth money to researchers pursuing methods to create new ioun stones. The fate of these Azlanti structures and works from Ruins of Azlant has not yet been confirmed in canon.

Xalmerni, a trader in Stethelos who sells ioun stones, is referenced in Rise of New Thassilon 83. The description of his stock references the stones in Seekers of Secrets 43–50, which is the source for the assertion suggesting that the methods of their creation are not known beyond ancient Azlant and Thassilon.

Pathfinder Second Edition renamed ioun stones to aeon stones, and Core Rulebook 605 added the cited detail suggesting that aeon stones might be remnants of tools used to create the Universe; GM Core retains this detail. The canon ramifications of this, if any, on any association with Azlant or how widely knowledge of their crafting has spread has not been detailed in a canon source as of June 2024.

Second Edition aeon stones are Uncommon items, a rarity trait described on GM Core 223 as having formulas that are "often guarded and not readily available." This is consistent with past canon descriptions of tools and formulas for creating ioun/aeon stones existing in Azlanti ruins (Ruins of Azlant) or in the possession of Azlant-linked organizations (Knights of the Ioun Star, as insinuated by Occult Mysteries), but not being generally known, available, or learnable otherwise. GM Core 223 also describes item creation and mentions aeon stones in passing as an example.

The assertion from Seekers of Secrets 43 suggesting their methods of creation or innovation remain unknown is thus cited pending additional canon context or more direct clarification about how widely, if at all, the methods of crafting new aeon stones are known in modern Golarion. -Oznogon (talk) 02:00, 20 June 2024 (UTC)
