Retroactive changes
Pathfinder Second Edition
Lamias in pathfinder First Edition were depicted as devout worshipers of Lamashtu, and open to worship of other deities if it could serve their plots.1 Lamashtan lamias are significant characters in the Rise of the Runelords Pathfinder Adventure Path, a trait not changed by the Rise of the Runelords Anniversary Edition.2
In Pathfinder Second Edition, lamias were retroactively changed to be actively and violently antitheistic, and rejecting all forms of deific worship in favor of a form of spirituality associated with the stars.3
Canon replacements for the roles of Lamashtan lamias in Pathfinder First Edition adventures might not be specified or available. -Oznogon (talk) 19:49, 3 April 2025 (UTC)
Pathfinder Remaster
Lamias had properties introduced in another game that distinguished them from their depiction in mythology, and Pathfinder relied on rules from that game licensed via the Open Game License for its depiction of them.
The Pathfinder Second Edition Remaster Project changes the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game's license to the Open RPG Creative License, which prevents further use of that specific depiction of lamias in the Pathfinder campaign setting. Monster Core therefore introduced several retroactive changes to lamias.
References to the following details were removed or rewritten in the PathfinderWiki article to align with the language used in Monster Core:
- Lamias are now classified as humanoids.
- Most lamias have a serpentine lower body, and other forms are de-emphasized.
- Lamia matriarchs no longer explicitly assert that they are all serpentine in form.
- Despite retaining the title "matriarchs", lamia matriarchs can be of any gender.
