Meta:Shimye-Magalla
Retroactive change
In older material,12345 Shimye-Magalla was described as a singular new deity made from the amalgamation of Desna and Gozreh. This was confirmed in 2019 by James Jacobs to be a developmental error.6 Per the canon policy, production errors are not canon. - HTD (talk) 03:12, 19 February 2022 (UTC)
- Cult of Cinders 40 canonized the in-universe publication of theories by Gerhard Pendergrast suggesting Shimye-Magalla was one entity, and also describes them as inaccurate and Pendergrast as willing to destroy evidence suggesting otherwise. I've restored mentions of this as in-universe context for the retcon. -Oznogon (talk) 02:33, 21 January 2024 (UTC)
- The Mwangi Expanse 144 also describes Desna and Gozreh as being the two deities worshiped together as Shimye-Magalla, "so intertwined as to be inseparable" and "a powerful aspect of the open sky", by the Bonuwat people. The Mwangi Expanse makes no claim that they are a single divine entity. -Oznogon (talk) 01:52, 18 September 2024 (UTC)

Shimye-Magalla is a good example of something that snuck into canon accidentally and presented something in a way that was not aligned with my vision for the setting as Creative Director. I've no problem with there being pantheons of deities in the setting, as that makes a lot of sense, and Desna and Gozreh being a mini-pantheon in this way is an interesting pairing for sure... but having them "merge together" into one Deity Voltron is illogical from a world-building standpoint in our setting. It should have never seen print in 1st edition in the way it did, and correcting it in 2nd edition to make it obvious that it's a pantheon and not a case of "if a society decides something about the gods, their beliefs change how those gods actually exist." In the context of the encounter on (Cult of Cinders) page 40, I tried to show that the interpretation that the locals worship in this way as being a new deity formed out of the two rose entirely from the misunderstanding of visitors to the area simply not getting it. Something that, alas, happens all the time in the real world in circumstances like this." James Jacobs. (August 30, 2019). Reply to 2 - Cult of Cinders (GM Reference), Paizo messageboards.
