Seal (animal)
- For other meanings of "seal", please see seal (disambiguation).
Seals are semi-aquatic mammalian animals1 commonly encountered on Golarion's beaches. They are excellent hunters with sensitive whiskers that help them locate and track their prey even when it hides from them.23
Appearance
While each species of seal varies in size and appearance, most share the traits of a sleek aquadynamic body, large flippers, a single strong tail, a whiskered muzzle, and sharp teeth.3
Abilities
Most seals communicate through a combination of flipper slaps and barks or other vocalizations. They are also easily trained, which also indicates a certain level of intelligence.3
Ecology
Seals typically live most of their lives in the water, often in harbors or between icebergs in colder climes. They move onto land—most often rocky beaches—to rest and rear pups, and dive back into the water to hunt sea birds, fish, squids, and other smaller aquatic beings. They can hold their breath for long periods of time.
A group of seals can be called a pod, herd,1 or rookery, and can number from three to upwards of two dozen.3
Species
- Harbor seals, the most common seals, are famous for their fur and blubber2
- Leopard seals, a larger species and the only known species of seal that hunts humanoids2
