Un-deleting and revising
I restored and revised this template due to the discussion at Template talk:Badges. While {{Badges|spoiled=...}} can be used to label sections, it isn't very ergonomic and a little difficult to parameterize the text.
To avoid making {{Badges}} harder to use for a specific use case, I brought back a standalone template that replicates the behavior of {{Badges/Spoilerbanner}}, with an extra scope parameter to allow the text to be modified to better reflect the scope of the flagged content.
Due to the Spoilers policy and the nature of the content that the wiki documents, the wiki doesn't and won't accommodate more invasive spoiler banners or masking. This template does not propose or enable anything new, it offers only an easier-to-use alternative to the functionality of {{Badges}}. The banner also respects the same user preferences Gadget to hide spoiler banners. -Oznogon (talk) 07:42, 16 March 2025 (UTC)
- The past discussion on this subject might have been useful to retain. I can't restore it. From what I remember, multiple granular spoiler banners were opposed by Yoda8myhead for being distracting, and the badge solution in its original incarnation (one {{Badges}} template with parameters for each badge type, one Spoiled badge, and one spoiler banner listing the works spoiled by an article's content, all available only at the top of the article) was a compromise.
- Later MediaWiki upgrades allowed for more intentionally designed and easier-to-use article badges. {{Badges}} could now be invoked anywhere on the article, the template could be invoked multiple times in an article, and any associated banner would appear at the template invocation instead of only at the top of the article.
- This template facilitates the kinds of spoiler-warning saturation previously opposed (but so does {{Badges}} with the intervening MediaWiki improvements). Re-opening the discussion on that might be prudent. -Oznogon (talk) 07:55, 16 March 2025 (UTC)
- The on-wiki discussions at the spoiler policy itself are most relevant for historic context. There's a technically still-active discussion about revising it on PathfinderWiki talk:Spoilers that I've just bumped. Others were in the deleted forums or are buried somewhere in the Discord.
- The discussion here is IMO best limited to determining whether:
- This template is appropriate for use on the wiki, and if not, whether or how it can be made more appropriate
- Having a redundant template to {{Badges|spoiled=...}} is appropriate
- This template's documentation should provide guidance above and beyond Project:Spoilers on its appropriate usage
Deleted discussion at Template talk:Spoiler/doc
Below, under Deprecation vs. Repurposing, are the contents of Template talk:Spoiler/doc before its deletion. Is this what you wanted, Oz? Regardless, it's probably worth retaining old conversations to prevent wheel reinventions. If not, if you point me to it, I may be able to pull what you want back. --Fleanetha (talk) 10:03, 16 March 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks; that is relevant context for why this template was deleted in the first place. But I think the discussion I was looking for was in fact over on the spoiler policy talk archives at PathfinderWiki talk:Spoilers/Archive 1.
- I've now archived that previously deleted discussion in the same manner here as well. -Oznogon (talk) 20:56, 16 March 2025 (UTC)
