(Creature)

Abyssal merfolk,1 also known as deep merfolk,2 are merfolk acclimated to extreme underwater depths.2

Appearance

Deep merfolk share some traits with their shallower-homed kin, such as humanoid torsos and piscine tails. Their adaptations to the deep, however, include luminous eyes;1 darker, translucent skin;12 and the ability to survive the crushing pressure of deep ocean waters.1 Some have tails that resemble anglerfish or viperfish,1 or long silvery tails with red fins.2

They have an uncanny reputation that is wholly unearned, as abyssal merfolk are no more likely to be evil than any other merfolk.12 They tend to be similarly reserved and private peoples.2

On Golarion

Deep merfolk battle merlucents for control over rich thermal vents on the ocean floor.3

On other planes

On the Plane of Water, deep merfolk live in the dark seas near the plane's border with the Plane of Earth.4
