Baku (magical beast)
- For other meanings of "Baku", please see Baku (disambiguation).
Bakus are intelligent magical beasts that feed on dreams.1
Appearance
A baku is a quadruped with brown shaggy fur. It has two tusks and an elongated snout. While bakus have legs, they can supernaturally fly and typically float through the air. They are typically 5 feet long and weigh 100 pounds.2[citation needed]
Abilities
Bakus can consume a nearby creature's thoughts, feelings, and dreams, and can choose to consume only its fears and nightmares. Consuming all of a creature's dreams leaves it fatigued upon awakening.
Bakus can also fly, see in the dark, turn invisible, induce sleep in other creatures, travel the Ethereal Plane, and modify others' memories.2[citation needed]
Ecology
Bakus are solitary creatures and prefer to remain hidden from the humanoids whose dreams they consume, as they do not like feeding on thoughts about themselves. They often hover near sleeping quarters and housing. Despite their relationship to sleeping creatures, bakus do not sleep.2[citation needed]
On Golarion
Bakus roam the Wild Peaks of Zi Ha.3
In culture
The Baku Theater in Kasai is named after bakus.4 As of 4715 AR, the Korvosan spiritualist and oneiromancer Madame Carrington was allied with a baku.5
Variants
Baku dreamweavers are bakus who selectively feed on only the most potently creative and imaginative beings. They are especially at home in the Dreamlands and can enter it at will.1
