Dot rendering

To confirm, I can see the new hlist deals with adding an appropriate dot between the elements of a navbox list now but:

  1. Does it handle the spacing between the elements as well, i.e., does it automatically apply the same amount of space either side of the dot? Do we need to add spaces after the elements in the list or is this a bad idea and will corrupt the formatting to do so?
  2. Does it handle the issue of keeping a dot on the line with its preceding element rather than placing it on the next line?

I'll add the answers to the help page. --Fleanetha (talk) 06:46, 14 September 2014 (UTC)

1. The hlist class handles the spacing between elements. You shouldn't need to add spaces after elements in the list. 2. It should keep dots on the same line as the preceding element without any extra markup, but let me know if you see any examples otherwise. I haven't spotted any such misbehavior yet in FF or Chrome. --Oznogon (talk) 23:15, 14 September 2014 (UTC)
Thanks Oznogon - I'll amend this to the help page. --Fleanetha (talk) 08:14, 16 September 2014 (UTC)
Hello Oznogon - I found one, sorry. The {{Novels list}} in my Firefox reader is placing the dot on the next line between Nightblade & Pirate's Promise rather than retaining it with Nightblade within {{Fiction navbox}}. Also, separately, we now have a very long list of single entries when the same Novels list is transcluded into Portal:Fiction. I could see what User:Yoda8myhead did to stop this for {{Fiction navbox}} but cannot see how to do the same for the portal: any ideas?. --Fleanetha (talk) 05:58, 17 September 2014 (UTC)
Nice catch! I wasn't seeing it until I started resizing my browser window, and even then only when the bullet fell in just the right spots. I've suggested a fix to the CSS at Forum:.hlist_CSS_tweaks, as well as a change that will make the {{hlist}} template useful for the same transcluded lists on the Portals pages. You'd just wrap the list transclusion in the {{hlist}} template. For instance: {{hlist|{{Novels list}}}}. That works right now, but because the list is nested within a few elements, the style is wrapping the list in unnecessary parentheses. The change I recommend should remove those parentheses. --Oznogon (talk) 00:57, 3 October 2014 (UTC)
As noted by User:Morbus Iff, I botched {{hlist}}. Use {{flatlist}} instead. --Oznogon (talk) 11:25, 8 March 2015 (UTC)

Whether or not to italicize AKA parenthesis symbols

When a subject is "also known as" secondary name(s), it's common in contexts such as navboxes to write the primary name in plain text and then the secondary name(s) italicized within parentheses. The Template:Ancestries navbox's previous contributors happened to not italicize parenthesis symbols, such as "kholo (gnoll)". However, can we poll PFWiki contributors' opinions to see if anyone would prefer changing that navbox to start italicizing parenthesis symbols, as in "kholo (gnoll)"? PathfinderWiki:Manual of style and Help:Navboxes don't explicitly define whether it's correct to italicize or to not italicize. Let me know if another Talk page is more appropriate for conducting this discussion. --Descriptivist (talk) 10:27, 28 September 2024 (UTC)
